Meet the hosts – Gary and Dianne
Affolter
The Apple Crest Inn Bed and Breakfast is a dream
come true for us. We spent many years as Christian school teachers
serving as missionaries all around the world. From Nigeria,
West Africa to Singapore in the Far East and many states inbetween,
we lived with our three children in wonderful areas and among
interesting cultures. We have always loved travel, and our family
has stayed at many Bed and Breakfasts around the world.
After returning
to the United States from the Far East, we decided to retire from
teaching full time. For four years, we planned, collected antique
mantles, made hand-made tiles, and found just the right wallpapers
and furniture before taking on the project full time. The Inn opened
in March of 1999 after a year of full time attention to every
detail.
The Inn
reflects our travels around the world. Our African treasures are
featured in the Safari Room. Heirloom paintings and a quilt from
1934 are found in the Rose Room. The Wedgwood Room displays historic
landmarks from England where Gary spent a year during college days.
The Camelot Room features antique armor from days spent antiquing
through back alleys in Wales and England. The Orchard Room displays
Dianne’s collection of apples from all over the world. The Acropolis
Room was inspired by a sculpture that Dianne’s father did at the
University of Nebraska many years ago, and after visiting the ruins
of Athens, the historic buildings on the Greek mountain became
significant.
Since opening
our doors at the Apple Crest Inn Bed and Breakfast, many wonderful
guests have visited in our home. Some have wanted a pampered
getaway. Others have come for quiet and relaxation. Many come for
the craft fairs, the Razorback home games, homecomings and reunions.
Honeymooners have found the Inn to be a treasure in Northwest
Arkansas. Whatever the need of our guests, we feel honored to be
part of each guest’s life for a short time, and we hope each will
find peace and tranquility. Come sit on a porch rocker, read a book,
or just soak in a whirlpool and leave here ready to face another
day.
